Pre-release · What the socket and BIOS-chip evidence says today, and what nobody has committed to
No Zen 6 processor has shipped. Nothing here is a hands-on claim, no board was flashed, and no chip was run. Everything on this page comes from AMD documentation that press captured before it came down, from board vendors’ own product listings, and from named outlets — all cited at the bottom, and all read in full before being used. We give no launch date, because AMD has not given one.
Reported: yes, very probably. AMD’s own technical documentation was seen listing the Zen 6 desktop family against Socket AM5, and board vendors have been saying their current boards will get there by firmware update since October 2025. The BIOS chip size is not the gate. Boards with a 32 MB BIOS chip and boards with 64 MB are both reported to support Zen 6, so a 32 MB board is not disqualified — which is the opposite of the advice you will most often see. What a 32 MB chip may cost you is something different, and it is the interesting part of this page. And none of it is a promise about your model: that has always come down to whether your board maker publishes the firmware.
This page uses the same two tiers as our platform pages, and on this subject the distinction does real work:
Almost everything below is Reported, and that is not caution for its own sake. The strongest single piece of evidence here is a page on AMD’s own documentation site that is no longer there. HotHardware’s account credits the person who found it with having “managed to screenshot it before it was, seemingly, taken down.” We do not link pages we cannot open, so this page cites the outlets that read it while it was up rather than pointing you at a dead vendor URL.
That also sets when this page needs revisiting: when AMD publishes Zen 6 platform documentation it does not withdraw, when a board vendor publishes a Zen 6 CPU support list for a specific model, or at launch — whichever comes first. Until one of those happens, the tier labels below are the honest description of what is known.
Reported. In late August 2026, AMD’s technical documentation site was seen listing Zen 6 processors against Socket AM5. HotHardware reported it on 26 August 2026: “AMD’s technical documentation site says that Zen 6 processors are coming to the desktop Socket AM5 platform in at least two different guises: Olympic Ridge and ‘Medusa 1’.” TechSpot reported the same listing the following day: “The site lists three Zen 6 CPU lineups, two of which support AM5. These include the desktop-exclusive chips, codenamed Olympic Ridge, and some Medusa APUs.”
Olympic Ridge is the one most readers here are asking about. HotHardware puts it plainly: “Olympic Ridge is the standard Zen 6 desktop family.” Medusa is the integrated-graphics side of the lineup; TechSpot expects those parts to “appear in laptops and other low-power devices in 2027.” Of the codenames in that listing, Olympic Ridge and Medusa1 sat against AM5. A further part, Medusa2, was listed against AMD’s FP10 socket and not against AM5.
Reported, and older than this month. The August sighting was not the first signal. Board vendors had been saying it themselves for nearly a year. HotHardware, 10 October 2025: “both ASUS and ASRock have explicitly confirmed that their new motherboards will have support for Zen 6,” and “the new CPUs will be compatible immediately after release on 800 series ASRock products.” TechSpot’s write-up of the same announcements, a day later, put it as “B850 boards, currently supporting Zen 4 and Zen 5 processors, will be compatible with AMD’s next-generation Ryzen chips.”
The wider market has been signalling it less directly. As HotHardware notes, motherboard vendors “unsubtly promised as much with BIOS updates already adding support for ‘next generation AMD processors’.” A release note that adds support for an unnamed future processor is a vendor telling you something it has not been cleared to announce.
Everything above is a statement about the socket. Whether a particular Zen 6 processor actually starts in the particular board you own depends on your board maker publishing firmware for that exact model — and that will still be true after launch, because a processor fitting the socket has never been the same thing as your board starting it. We do not publish per-board CPU support tables, for the reasons set out on the AM5 upgrade path page. Your board’s own CPU support list, published by the company that made it, is the authority.
The version of this you will meet on forums goes: most AM5 boards ship a 32 MB BIOS chip, the newest ones ship 64 MB, therefore only the 64 MB boards will get Zen 6. That is worth taking apart, because the reporting says something different — and because the conclusion people draw from it is “buy a new board,” which is expensive to get wrong.
Reported. Both sizes are said to be supported. TweakTown, 13 October 2025: “Zen 6 will support the AM5 platform, with both 32MB and 64MB BIOS AM5 motherboards compatible.” It attributes the detail to the enthusiast account HXL — “both 32MB and 64MB variants of the 600-800 series AM5 motherboards support Zen 6.” HotHardware carried the same claim the same day, as “any Socket AM5 motherboard with a 600 or 800 series chipset—which is all Socket AM5 motherboards—can support Zen 6,” and was careful to condition it: “if well-known enthusiast and occasional insider HXL is correct.”
Note what that source is. HXL is a leaker — not AMD, and not a board vendor. Two outlets carrying one leak is still one leak, and we are labelling it Reported for exactly that reason. It is the specific claim this page exists to address, so we are not going to leave it out; we are also not going to launder it into something firmer than it is.
So what does the bigger chip actually buy? Headroom, on the reporting available. HotHardware’s reading is that “the board with larger BIOS ROMs can probably include additional software for the pre-boot UEFI environment” — room for more firmware features, rather than an entry ticket to Zen 6.
And here is the real cost of a small chip, which is not the same as being locked out. A 32 MB chip is finite, and a vendor filling it has to choose what comes out. HotHardware, 10 October 2025: “Typical extant motherboards usually use 32MB BIOS ROMs, and what that means in practice is that future firmware updates for extant AM5 motherboards may require users to decide between an older BIOS for Zen 4 support, or a newer BIOS for Zen 6 support.”
If that plays out, the question stops being “will my board take Zen 6” and becomes “what does my board give up to take Zen 6.” It is a shape we have already documented once: on AM4, firmware that added newer processors to older boards dropped some older ones to make room, and the choice landed on the owner. That is written up, with its sources, on our AM4 upgrade path page. Nobody has published which AM5 boards would face it, or what they would drop, because the firmware does not exist yet.
Reported — but what is reported here is a vendor’s own wording. ASUS put it in product copy. HotHardware, 10 October 2025, quotes the ASUS B850M AYW Gaming OC Wi-Fi 7 listing as offering “future-proof Zen 6 support by 64MB BIOS.” TweakTown reported a comparable listing on a different board three days later, saying ASUS “recently and presumably mistakenly labeled its new X870 AYW GAMING WIFI W motherboard with a 64MB BIOS as ready for Zen 6,” “by putting ‘Zen 6’ next to the board’s 64MB BIOS spec, which is double the 32MB standard of most AM5 motherboards.”
Two things follow from that, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is genuinely useful: 64 MB is the exception rather than the norm. TweakTown’s “double the 32MB standard of most AM5 motherboards” is the part of that sentence worth keeping. If you are comparing two boards and one advertises 64 MB, it is telling you something real about the part fitted.
The second is that “future-proof … by 64MB BIOS” is marketing copy, and it is doing what marketing copy does: implying a benefit without saying what the alternative loses. It does not say a 32 MB board will not run Zen 6. It does not have to, because the reader supplies that themselves — which is how this became common advice in the first place.
The honest position is narrow. The reporting says a 32 MB board is not excluded from Zen 6. The same reporting says a 32 MB board may have to give something up to get there. Neither has been demonstrated on shipping firmware. So:
The other half of this decision is the one that has nothing to do with Zen 6. A board you buy now has to run the processor you are putting in it now, with the connectivity and the chipset tier you need, for the whole time you own it. That is a decision you can actually check, against specifications that actually exist. Our chipset comparison is the tier-by-tier version of it.
We are not telling you which boards ship a 32 MB chip and which ship 64 MB. That is a per-model specification, we have not verified it board by board, and it is not a row we carry in our review specification tables — your board’s own product page states it. We are also not telling you whether your board will run Zen 6, we are not naming a processor model, and we are not quoting a price. None of those are knowable from what has been published.
Reported, and reported as a range: late 2026 to early 2027. TechSpot, 11 October 2025: “Zen 6, slated for release in late 2026 or early 2027.” Nearly a year later, on 27 August 2026, TechSpot still had it as “AMD is expected to introduce Zen 6 sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.” A window that has not narrowed in ten months is a window nobody has firmed up.
AMD has not committed to a date, so we are not picking a quarter and we are not treating any of those months as fixed. We will state it more precisely when AMD does, and not before. If you are reading this after Zen 6 has launched, the date is a fact you can now look up, and the two questions above this section are the ones this page was written to answer.

Three pieces covering this same story would not open for us. TechPowerUp’s write-up returned HTTP 403, VideoCardz returned HTTP 402, and a Tom’s Hardware article on larger BIOS chips came back truncated to the point where we could not quote it. None of the three is cited above, and none should be added by anyone who has not read it first. A citation nobody can open is worse than no citation, because it looks like it was checked.
