What ASUS changed on the AM5 boards wearing it — and what the suffix does not tell you about any one of them
ASUS has re-issued part of its AM5 800-series line with NEO on the end of the model name — eight boards with a live ASUS product page as of 9 September 2026. ASUS describes the suffix as marking a doubled BIOS ROM — 32MB to 64MB — NitroPath DRAM Technology on the two X870E ROG Strix models, and a BCLK isolation feature it says was previously a ROG Crosshair one. What the suffix does not mark is a single network specification: read from ASUS spec pages, the eight Neo boards run from 2.5Gb Ethernet with Wi-Fi 6E at one end to two 5Gb ports with Wi-Fi 7 at the other. Everything on this page is based on published specifications.
ASUS introduced the Neo boards in an article of its own, and that article is the only first-party statement of what the suffix is for. It names three things.
A bigger BIOS chip. ASUS: “We’re doubling the ROM capacity of the latest ASUS AM5 motherboards from 32MB to 64MB.” The reason it gives is space — “The extra storage space not only gives us the ability to provide out-of-the-box support for the latest AMD CPUs, but it also allows us to include pre-installed WiFi drivers for a more streamlined experience as you install your operating system.”
NitroPath DRAM Technology, on two boards. ASUS scopes this one itself: “The ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi7 Neo and ROG Strix X870E-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo kick things up even further with NitroPath DRAM Technology, which reworks the layout of the traditional DRAM slot to improve signal quality, increasing DRAM overclocking performance by up to 400 MT/s depending on factors like memory speed, module, and system configuration.” Two boards out of eight, by ASUS’s own sentence — not a property of the suffix.
BCLK isolation. ASUS: “Previously limited to owners of our higher-tier ROG Crosshair models, this feature allows you to isolate your CPU’s base clock (BCLK) from the clock signals controlling other components like memory and the Infinity Fabric, potentially allowing you to raise BCLK higher than you could otherwise.” That is an overclocking feature, and the “up to 400 MT/s” figure above is ASUS’s claim about its own hardware rather than a number anyone here has measured.
This page reports what ASUS says about the boards carrying the suffix. It does not say that no board without the suffix has any of it — we have not read every non-Neo ASUS board’s specification against that list, and a claim that broad would need a source we do not have. If you are looking at a specific non-Neo board, its own ASUS product page is the thing to check.
This is the part worth taking away from the page, because the shorthand you will see — “Neo means 5 Gb Ethernet”, “Neo means Wi-Fi 7” — is false on a board ASUS is shipping today.
The TUF Gaming B850I WiFi Neo is the counterexample. Its ASUS specification page lists “1 x Realtek® 2.5Gb Ethernet” and “2x2 Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax)”. It is a Neo board with 2.5 Gb networking and a Wi-Fi generation behind the four ROG Strix Neos, every one of which lists “1 x Realtek® 5Gb Ethernet” and Wi-Fi 7. At the other end of the same roster, the ProArt B850-Creator WiFi Neo lists “2 x Realtek 5Gb Ethernet” — two ports, not one. The TUF Gaming B850-PRO WIFI7 W NEO sits in between again: Wi-Fi 7, but 2.5 Gb Ethernet.
ASUS never claimed otherwise. Its own article restricts the networking sentence to two named boards: “Previous Strix B-series boards typically offered 2.5G Ethernet ports, but the ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo and ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo get you in the action with 5G Ethernet ports.” That is a claim about two Strix models. The generalisation is something readers and listings add afterwards.
So the suffix is not a specification. It tells you a board is part of this refresh; it does not tell you its LAN speed, its Wi-Fi generation, or whether it has NitroPath. Those are per-board facts, and the table below is where to read them.
Every cell below was read from that board’s own ASUS specification page, linked in the last column, checked 2026-09-09. This is the set of Neo boards with a live ASUS product page on that date; ASUS can add to it, so treat the roster as current-as-of rather than final.

Two things the table makes obvious. The socket and the chipset never move: every Neo board is Socket AM5, and an X870E Neo is still an X870E board, a B850 Neo still a B850 one. If you want what those chipsets actually give you, that is the chipset guide, and it does not change because a board is a Neo. The LAN and Wi-Fi columns, by contrast, move three times inside eight rows.

The ROM capacity change ASUS quotes above — “from 32MB to 64MB” — is the one Neo detail people ask about for a reason other than the board in front of them, and what it does and does not mean for future CPU support is covered on our page about whether an AM5 board will take a Zen 6 Ryzen, which is where that argument belongs.
A Neo board and its non-Neo predecessor share a model number. “ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi” and “ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi7 Neo” are different products with different specifications, sold at the same time, and a listing, a review or a comparison written for one is not automatically about the other.

The three feature claims and every quoted sentence come from ASUS’s own Neo article, linked below and read on 9 September 2026. Every socket, chipset, form factor, LAN and Wi-Fi value in the table was read on the same date from that individual board’s ASUS specification page, linked in its row — not copied from a neighbouring page on this site. Nothing here is a test result: no Neo board was built into a system, no network port was measured and no memory overclock was attempted, so ASUS’s NitroPath and BCLK claims are reported as ASUS’s claims. This page does not rank these boards or recommend one over another, and it does not decode what Strix, TUF or ProArt mean as product lines.
